Amsterdam can be an exciting city. While the Red Light District may or may not be to your taste, there is plenty else to see, the city is so open to sexuality that it is amazing. In the expensive center of town there is a famous sex shop and one of the most popular museums is the Amsterdam Sex Museum on 18 Damrak street.
The first thing that strikes you about the Sex Museum is there love of orgasmic women. I happily took my partner into the museum as the whole building is a celebration of female sexuality and she had a great time… she may even have got a few ideas.

The museum has a lot of interesting items. The first thing that you see is a large bowl made of penises. This attitude of fun with sex is throughout the whole museum as the displays celebrating the photographer who got to take nude pictures of Marilyn Monroe and the statues celebrating the history of sex and even the robotic display illustrating the future of sex.
“There is not one expression of art in which erotic images do no appear in one way or another: lithographies, etchings, oil paintings, objects of bronze etc,” The Museum’s information booklet proudly states. This couldn’t be truer as a paleolithic phallus sits next to a dish from over a thousand years ago of a masturbating warrior. This bizarre scene is alongside some 19th century pornography and even some homemade orgy scenes from the 50′s: all testaments to this forgotten culture. It seems that in times past Europe was alive with sex and sensuality, as the sex toys from the 19th century show. The leaflet explains, “Beside the ‘official culture’, a second-hidden-culture (sic) has always existed.”
Celebrating Sex and Sensuality
This second culture seems like the really fun one. The museum doesn’t stop at anything to celebrate orgasmic women, no kinds of sexuality are off bounds. There are displays of group sex, anal sex, erotic parties, mutual masturbation and squirting orgasms. There is even a darkened room at the back where every kind of sex act is depicted, definitely a must-see if you feel up to it.
The sex museum is fast becoming yet another must-see in the city with so much to see. Even if you are just going for the windmills and good food, the sex museum is still a great way to round off your holiday, even if you feel obliged only to see the sections that have the articles in them.
